Bouldering: Hatun Machay
Under Construction: Map of bouldering coming soon.
It is a magical place. The forrest of rock 2 hours from Huaraz, it is isolated and during the wetter times of year is blanketed in a soup of fog. The routes are good being mostly easy, but the potential for bouldering is huge. We spent the better part of three weeks there and put up many problems. Uniquely there are many roofs and overhangs that yield classic hard problems that are some of the best we have seen in South America.
There is evidence of human habitation there dating to 9000 years ago. Pictographs and petroglyphs are abundant. Hatun Machay lies at 4200m.
Getting there is not the easiest. You can take a Kombi for 5-10 soles from Huaraz then get off at Km131 then walk up a big hill to the rocks. You can also take a Taxi from Huaraz but I hear it is about 120 soles. See ToposPeru for more details.
There is a refuge that allows climbers warm shelter and friendly staff. You can camp for 10/soles or sleep inside for 20/soles.
